Heather for E-Waste and the Twilight of a Textile Icon: This Week in Interior Design
This week shows the interior design industry from two completely different angles. On one hand, a major DIY chain turns e-waste into flowers, building its ESG image in the process. On the other, a 55-year-old British fabric and wallpaper brand disappears from the market, crushed by costs that not even brand recognition on the level of Ralph Lauren Home could withstand. We take a look at what happened — and what it means for the home furnishings market.
01 · Recycling & ESG
Castorama Collects E-Waste in Exchange for Heather Seedlings [1]
From September 17 to 19, 2026, Castorama stores across Poland ran the autumn edition of the "Flowers for E-Waste" ("Kwiaty za Elektrograty") campaign. The rule was simple: customers brought in used electrical or electronic equipment — broken appliances, old phones, cables, batteries — and received a heather seedling in return. This is yet another edition of the chain's recurring initiative, through which it tries to familiarize customers with the safe recycling of e-waste containing substances harmful to the environment.
From a brand strategy standpoint, this is a fairly well-thought-out move — ESG stops being just a slogan on the corporate website and becomes a concrete, large-scale action that brick-and-mortar customers can take part in. The issue of e-waste is becoming increasingly pressing in the home furnishings segment, so initiatives like this could well become a standard that customers start expecting from other furniture and interior brands and chains as well.
02 · Bankruptcies
British Home Textiles Brand Designers Guild Declares Bankruptcy [2]
On an entirely different note — and a far less optimistic one — comes news from the United Kingdom. On September 24, 2026, London-based Designers Guild, founded in 1970 and known for its fabrics, wallpapers and furniture, as well as its collaborations with Ralph Lauren Home and Christian Lacroix Maison, declared bankruptcy and ceased operations. The company laid off the majority of its 93 employees, with the liquidation process being handled by advisory firm Interpath.
The causes cited for the collapse are the combined effects of Brexit and the war in Ukraine, which drove up operating costs while simultaneously weakening sales. Co-founder Tricia Guild called the closure "a source of immense grief and sadness" — and it's hard to disagree, given that it marks the end of five and a half decades in the interior design market.
After the upbeat Castorama story, this news lands like a cold shower, but it highlights something important: the current cost crisis spares no one, not even established, recognizable premium brands. If a player with a position and history as strong as Designers Guild feels it this deeply, it's a warning sign for the entire home textiles segment — especially for companies operating at the intersection of the UK and continental Europe.
Summary
Summary
Two stories, two opposite poles of the industry — one shows how DIY chains are building customer loyalty around sustainability, the other is a reminder that even iconic brands aren't immune to harsh cost realities. Both threads are worth following, because sooner or later they will leave their mark on the offerings, prices, and strategies of companies in the interior furnishings sector.
